D-3

Difficulty of block: easy
Number of pieces: 2
Method used: hand applique

The name of this block is Jason's Jacks. I'm not sure what's up with my background fabric but it was like appliqueing on a Kleenex! Why is it some fabric seem thinner or softer then others? I buy all my fabric from quilt shops.

A-5

Difficulty of block: easy
Number of pieces: 29
Method used: hand piecing

Cathie's Campfire with it's cute little flying geese, was a fast and fun one to make.

Should Have Had A Plan

I've been a little carefree to this point and now I see I should have had a plan. Normally, I am very organized and plan ahead. When I started working on Dear Jane, I was feeling a little wild and crazy and didn't put much thought into it. The only plan was to randomly pick blocks and use fabric combinations twice. Today I discovered that block M-2 and M-3 are of the same fabric combination. Lucky for me, that was the only time it happened.

As the block numbers increase and my memory decreases, I have come up with a few easy ways to make sure this doesn't happen again. On page 12 of the Dear Jane book, is a diagram of blocks. I have recorded beside each finished block a number. For example, H-11 has the number 15 beside it and L-6 also has the number 15 beside it. This tells me that both blocks have been made from the same fabric combination. Also, my finished blocks are stored in a nice decorative box, which I have now inserted row markers and placed the blocks in order. I could also refer to my Dear Jane photo file, on the computer, but this is not as practical when working in the sewing room. My Dear Jane book and box of finished blocks would be right there, as I prepare the next blocks.

G-6

Difficulty of block: difficult (to hold)
Number of pieces: 31
Method used: hand piecing

I can't believe I did it! I hand pieced (no paper piecing) the tiny inner star of Papa's Star. I cut each piece out separately and hand stitched them together. The little star is made up of seventeen tiny, tiny pieces and measures just 1-inch. Jane Stickle did it by hand, so I knew it was possible. It's not perfect, but I didn't expect perfect on my first try. Sure hope they don't get any smaller then that!

Brenda's draft of Papa's Star is quite different then how Jane made the original. Both Jane's inner and outer stars are on an angle. I decided not to redraft the pattern, as it looked scary enough as it was. I've listed G-6 on my sidebar as an oops! pattern.

J-10

Difficulty of block: moderate
Number of pieces: 21
Method used: hand applique

Chicko's Calla Lily was not as difficult to make as I thought it would be. But, it sure was time consuming. Lots of applique and points to match. If you plan on making this block, I would make the melons just a tiny bit smaller. The pattern, as is, has the melons touching the outside seam of the block. Problems may arise when adding the sashing.

Sorry about the photos. It looks like my choice of fabric was not the best for this pattern. The close-up photo certainly isn't any easier on the eyes.
